It’s September, it’s Saturday, it’s time for the 2023 Southwark Slam 🙂
The Southwark Slam is running all the parkruns in the London Borough of Southwark, in the month of September. We started doing it 8 ago and always starts at Southwark parkrun to coincide with their annual birthday celebrations 😀
This year was Southwark parkrun’s 10th anniversary. They had encouraged people to have a picnic, bring something for the local food bank and baby bank collection and were inundated with offerings. The finish funnel had a shimmering shower curtain for the 579 finishers, a post-COVID attendance record and there were tables laden with homemade cakes brought by regulars.
This was my 14th trip to Southwark parkrun and it feels very familiar with lots of friendly faces. There were also, due to the power of social media (thank you Shona for linking my Twitter to the Burgess newsletter) lots of new people doing the ‘slam’ generating much camaraderie and deepening our community roots.
Southwark parkrun is a 3-lap course with opportunities to high-five other runners. Many friendly marshalls all wearing party hats, contributed to a truly celebratory occasion.
With enthusiasm fully topped up, next week we head to Peckham Rye, the course with a hill, bridges and streams, for the second instalment to the 2023 Southwark Slam.
