It’s always a buzz doing the new runners welcome and never more so than on the first day of the year. Most the 336 participants from near and far were happy and eager to start the year on the right foot. With the rain being kept miraculously at bay we headed off for, a new year of parkrun glory!
Putting on a New Year's Day parkrun is optional for events as some core teams might be away for the festive period. This year for the third time Burgess was all systems go meaning I was able to start my year participating at my home event, including with a returning regular, Kirsty, back to complete her 250th run!
Starting at the back I was able to work through the field chatting with lots of friendlies on the way around. I used some of the quieter sections to set out some goals for 2024. These include;
1. to complete the Ascension Day parkrun, a special event, on 09/05/24 in either Norway or Finland!
2. To finish the year with the LonDONE ‘crown’ (completing all the parkruns in London with new ones set to commence).
3. to organise and complete the Southwark ‘Marathon’ Slam (more on this later).
4. to reach 300 parkruns at Burgess, currently on 277.
5. to volunteer at parkrun at least 12 times this year
I feel these goals will positively impact my health, engagement and contribution to the community and fuel my sense of adventure!

Next week I’ll be at Burgess for their 500 event which is going to be a celebration!
