What part does technology play in your running? I’m not talking about bionics although fair play to all the Lee Majors out there. I’m talking about watches, headphones and such devices. With brands such as iPhone, Garmin, Whoop, Fitbit and the ‘one’ Ring recording every potential health metric and some. Technology can easily become an integrated part of your run, I mean if it’s not on Strava did it even happen?
This morning I set off for a warm-up run, wanting to shake out my body, and process the week before picking up bananas for Burgess parkrun one of my favourite London parkruns.
I stepped outside and it was still dark. I clicked my Garmin on and when the GPS was found clicked again as I set off; these are habitual, comforting actions.
Running a familiar route I only looked at my watch when I reached what would be 1k, I hadn’t heard the familiar beep and to my horror my device was not working #panic!
I fumbled with the watch but to no avail, I was going to be ‘naked running’ for the day.
Soaked from the rain I turned up at Burgess parkrun and needed to have a word with myself to ensure I had the right energy before doing the ‘new runners welcome’, especially with guests from Adelaide, Australia, Stockholm and Sweden in attendance.
Taking to the start line I could relax because although my watch wasn’t working Parkrun is a free-timed event 🙂 the timekeepers were ready, the assembled participants were ready and then we were off.
With the event finished and the event packed/closed down, the results were processed and then my email came through telling me my official time which I can manually upload to Strava 🙂
For next week’s parkrun I’ll be doing my 100th volunteering berth and with it being the Halloween run this might call for some sort of fancy dress!
