As we embark on the first Saturday of the new year, it’s worth noting that today marked the second parkrun in the UK for 2025. Some events, including Burgess parkrun, welcomed participants on January 1st, thanks to the dedicated volunteers who made it all possible. On that chilly Wednesday, 373 seasoned parkrunners took to the course, but today’s turnout was even more impressive - an additional 359 runners joined us on this frosty morning to tackle the 5k.
While delivering the new runners' welcome, I glimpsed the mixed expressions among first-timers—many seemed to silently ponder, “What have I let myself in for and why am I here?” Thankfully, today’s Run Director, Hannah, offered reassurance and celebration in the form of milestones. A special shoutout went to Ray, completing his 100th parkrun, James Benjamin for completing his 250th parkrun and to Josephine Ocaka, a beloved member of the Burgess community/Pan London running community, who celebrated her 250th parkrun at Burgess (she’s actually done 425). The promise of cake to celebrate these achievements brought smiles all around!
Josephine is truly a force of nature, well-known for her warm and encouraging spirit. As a key figure behind the ‘Ugandan Crew’ who annual takeover Burgess parkrun in October to mark Uganda Independence Day. A regular runner with the Run Dem Crew, Black Girls Run, Addidas and Puma run clubs. You can spot her at parkruns across the country and even internationally whilst being the embodiment of a community runner. She recently featured in the latest parkrun UK video which you can see by clicking here.
With a huge round of applause for James, Josephine, Ray and today’s 41-strong volunteer team, Hannah passed the baton to the timekeepers, and off we went—all 732 of us—a vibrant, colourful and energetic mass cutting through the frost-kissed park.
Burgess parkrun takes pride in offering bananas at the finish line, but today’s celebration meant that homemade cakes were also generously provided to mark James’s, Josephine’s and Ray’s milestones. The joyful atmosphere left many first-timers pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome and festivities. When I asked some if they would return, the answer was a resounding, “Definitely!”
With New Year’s resolutions buzzing in the air, I’ve set my own goals for 2025:
To run 2025k 🙂
Run the half-marathon distance each month.
Complete the Southwark Slam in September, including volunteering at the two Southwark junior parkruns.
Reach 200 volunteer credits.
Visit 12 new parkrun events across three countries—who’s interested in exploring Lithuania with me?
Regain LonDone status.
Complete my 500th parkrun on 22nd March at Burgess parkrun with Paul Sinton-Hewitt. I’d better send him an invite!
James shared how one of his joys had been running with the Black Trail Runners throughout 2024. He’s also looking forward to soaking up the positive vibes and community spirit at parkruns—a goal I wholeheartedly share.
Here’s to more running adventures in 2025!
Stay well, stay safe, and happy running!
