Hello!

Thank you for joining me as we review week 2 of training for the Burgess Marathon.

This week I want to share the following;

  1. How I found my training plan

  2. What the training load was this week

  3. Who are care leavers?

  4. What’s in the store?

How I found my training plan

I’m following a running plan purchased from Runna. Runna is an app which enables you to input your current exercise levels and target date to produce a running and strength training plan. The app has lots of brilliant features including syncing workouts to your calendar.  I used Runna when I was training for my 10k run at Gay Pride last September. Following it meticulously it delivered the sub 40min goal I’d set myself (you can read about it here).

This week’s running training

Tuesday - 8k easy pace

Thursday - 11k easy pace

Saturday - 27k easy pace (did an extra 2k by accident)

Sunday - 8k easy pace

You can follow my training at Strava or message me if you’d like a copy of the full plan (which includes the strength workouts).

Who are care leavers?

This week I wanted to explain who ‘Care leavers’ are. They are people who when they were under 18 years old were unable to live with family or friends and the State ‘looked after’ them.

When they turn 18, like everyone else, legally they become adults and therefore can no longer be ‘looked after’ by the State.

Imagine you were asked to be fully responsible for yourself at age 18. Responsible for all food shopping, cooking, budgeting, paying the rent, all bills, if you’re not working claiming benefits and perhaps studying, all with no practical help from family.  For ANYBODY this would be a lot. Add in perhaps some unprocessed childhood trauma, multiple placement moves, inconsistent education, changing Social Workers and you see why care leavers are such a vulnerable group.

Become, the charity I’m raising money for, is helping to improve the outcomes for care leavers.

If you know someone who is a care leaver and needs some advice or support please direct them to Become's care and advice line

The store

In ‘the store’ this week I’m talking about Theragun

Theragun uses percussion to massage muscles and provides stress relief. It is the most important part of my self-care regime for life and completing this challenge.

I visited John Lewis and tested several massage guns. Theragun for me is the best brand for durability and relaxing your muscles my review is here

You can visit the Theragun store here - https://amzn.to/4eHi4JH

Any purchase you make I will get 1% which I will add to the fundraising.

Thank you!

I’ll be back next Sunday with an overview of how week 3 has gone. Until then.

Stay safe, stay well and happy running
